How to Make the Most of Year Ahead
Set and Ensure You Achieve Your Professional Goals for 2017
So, the holidays are officially over and you are finally really ready to tackle 2017. Now how the heck are you going to make 2017 better than 2016??
I propose that you be intentional in your actions this year. And in doing so, you will set yourself on a course for personal and professional fulfillment.
But in order to attain your goals, I recommend:
First, clearly identify what you want
Second, prevent yourself from being way laid by creating an accountability method and devising a strategy for staying on track.
Third, encourage yourself to persevere by rewarding yourself for reaching milestones along the way!
Get yourself ready for 2017 by doing this quick exercise below (you can knock this out in less than 15 minutes)!
So, What Do You Want?
Start with the fun stuff! Start by dreaming big. Answer the following questions:
What do you want your life to be like?
What would you like to do more or less of?
How could your life be even more imaginably great?
What areas of your life do you want to improve and focus on?
Then, once you have a clear vision of what you want, determine 3-5 specific and measurable goals that will help you achieve this vision.
Making $hit Happen
Now, let’s figure out how you are gong to reach those milestones you have set for yourself.
First off, goals don’t become reality without action. Block time on your calendar to
specifically focus and make progress on your goals. Be honest and realistic about your commitment to block-off time. Look at your obligations, prioritize yourself, and then determine how much time you will be able to commit.
Next, share your goals with your friends and colleagues. By sharing your goals, you quickly create camaraderie and a network of support. I have worked with many clients, and once they share their goals with friends, family and colleagues, they immediately benefit by gaining more clarity or they are inspired with ideas on how to achieve their goals. In addition, they become accountable for both their action and inaction.
Finally, the last step is to buddy-up! Find an accountability partner. I recommend selecting someone that you admire, respect and won’t blow off. Establish a schedule or a method for checking-in on one another to ensure that you are staying on track.
But what happens when you fall off the track? It’s a heck of a lot easier to not get back on the train and just stand on the train platform. The trouble is, you’ve been standing on that platform for a while now and it hasn’t gotten you where you wanted to go, has it?
So, make a contingency plan in advance. When things don’t go the way you intend (and I guarantee that will happen at some point) how will you cope?
One method that often encourages people to stay focused is to put money on the line. For example, you will have to pay your accountability partner $200 dollars when you don’t meet your milestones or when you fall of track.
Ensuring Success by Celebrating Success
The distance between you and your finish line can look long and daunting. But by breaking up the distance into smaller segments and allowing for water-breaks in between sprints – you are more likely to make it to the end of the race!
Knowing that, ensure that you identify and celebrate the small milestones or achievements you make along the way.
I would love to hear about your goals so that I can cheer you on throughout the year! So, what you will be striving to achieve in 2017??
