Making it through the Homestretch of 2016

With both the holidays and year-end reviews just around the corner, many of us are beginning to reflect upon this past year.

For me personally, this is the time of year when I look back and take stock in the progress I have made toward achieving my professional goals. While I may be disappointed that I have not yet been on Good Morning America or published my book, I’ve still come pretty darn far this year.

Instead of beating myself up for not reaching some of the goals I set for myself at the beginning of 2016, I need to acknowledge the significant strides I have made thus far. Which is why I need to recognize and appreciate both the small and large milestones!

Therefore, I complete the activity below - something I do with my clients, and I encourage you to do also. Doing this exercise bolsters my confidence, reenergizes me, and allows me to optimistically begin afresh in the New Year.

One thing I want to especially note, sometimes it may feel as though you have been dealt challenging cards. I encourage you to find the silver lining in those events. While this can be a difficult task, try to understand how those events have helped you to evolve personally/professionally, created new paths, or led to different opportunities.

I encourage you to spend some time on this exercise. Doing so, will help you appreciate what you have done this past year, where you are now, and where you still have to yet to go. I hope this exercise will fuel your personal and professional fires for 2017!

[Helpful Tip: Sometimes it helps to look through your calendar or journal]

Create three separate lists:

1. MILESTONES: List all of your successes, wins, breakthroughs, celebrations, and accomplishments for 2016. What did you accomplish? What progress did you make? What are you most proud of?

2. HURDLES: List all of your failure, losses, breakdowns, disappointments, and incompletions for 2016. Where did you fall short? What didn't pan out?

3. LEARNINGS/ REFLECTION: Write what you have learned about yourself in 2016. How did you evolve? How did you surprise yourself? What did you put off?

We have all had a HUGE year, jam-packed with both big and small events! And even if you don’t realize it now, you will by the end of the exercise – that you have taken significant strides towards achieving your goals and gained more clarity through the actions you’ve taken this year. You are in the perfect place to launch yourself into the next year!
